KHV Confirmed at TWO south Yorkshire venues
Last Updated on Monday, 03 September 2012 18:03
We have learnt of two confirmed cases of Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) in South Yorkshire. This is a very damaging and easily spread virus that affects common carp and carp varieties such as koi. The virus only affects fish and cannot be caught by humans, or other animals.
The EA have released two news articles Fish Health Management and Biosecurity and KHV Protecting Your Fishery
The Environment Agency (03708 506 506) is your first point of contact if you suspect an outbreak of disease in your fishery. After we have spoken to you, we may need to come and collect samples of fish to work out what the disease is. We may also need to contact the Fish Health Inspectorate – a separate Government body responsible for controlling the most serious types of disease.
The Fish Health Inspectorate has now taken over management of these two outbreaks of KHV. They are implementing controls at each site to contain and eradicate the disease, in order to protect Yorkshire’s fisheries and the livelihoods that depend upon them.
For more information about the FHI's responsibilities, current legislation, or forms and guidance, visit the Aquatic Animal Health and Movements website www.defra.gov.uk/aahm/
