Description

This venue is around 1 1/2 acres in size and has 2 ponds, top and bottom ponds. When you first see the venue you will be amazed by how it looks so much like a page out of "Mr Crabtree goes fishing", There are marginal reeds, overhanging trees, an island of reeds and lily beds scattered around both lakes, one of which has just been planted and cost 28 quid for a single plant! The water is run by Spenborough Angling Club. There are no facilities, and it is not suitable for anglers with disabilities.

The depths in this venue aren’t great, but in the summer it helps as it warms the water quickly, they range from around 1.5ft around the top end and slowly drop as you go along the canal like stretch to around 4ft.

In the bottom pond the depth is equal at about 2-4ft then drop slightly at far end to around 5ft, here is where the fish must hang in winter time. Considering the depth is shallow, the fish still fight as there is only one way… straight!

As they cannot dive to the bottom they go off like a freight train towards any snag they can find.

Species wise there is quite a variety, carp to about 20lb+, tench to around 4lb+, bream 5lb+, roach 1lb, perch 1lb, rudd 1lb odd crucians, newly stocked ide and carp. More of the little carp in bottom pond as it has been stocked with 1500 in the last 2 years. The little carp are easy to tempt with maggots and casters, as are the roach, perch and rudd. The bream seem to have a liking for maggots, chopped worm and pellet as well as corn. Tench and carp are taken on corn, pellet, worm and meat but smaller tench take maggots.

The lakes have an inlet and an outlet, which in summer the inlet seems to be good place as I have found out the past times I have been. In winter though I would try the deeper areas of the ponds as colder water will be spilling in through the inlet.
