Water Name

Smith's Pond, Maltby, Rotherham.

Description

This water situated in the old Colliery town of Maltby. It is without doubt a very spring, summer and autumn venue. The fishing can be very difficult during cold spells as there isn't a great deal of depth. A small stream that enters at the top end feeds the water and this probably has something to do with the depth as it is only 2ft deep here. The water gradually drops down to a maximum of 4ft deep towards the road and Car park end.

Fishing is from 22 comfortable pegs the majority of which are suitable for anglers with disabilities. There are no toilet or other facilities on site.

The bottom is fairly flat and the features to fish to tend to be found on the bankside. There is a good planting of trees and in summer they will grow over the water and provide good cover. There is also a good planting of marginal reeds and these can be obvious targets first and last thing at night.

The water does have a good colour throughout the year and this does help with the water being quite shallow. The water is well stocked with a good mixture of fish, the largest in the water are the Carp which were caught this summer to 18lb 9oz on flavoured luncheon meat. There are also good shoals of Bream to be had although not large there are plenty of them to provide good sport with the better fish reaching 4lb. Tench are well stocked with better fish caught to 2lb 4oz, they are mainly around a pound. Roach and Crucian Carp are stocked and in the main do not go larger than 2lb. There are also Gudgeon and a sprinkling of Rudd.

Maggot will get you a fish a chuck if that is what you are after. The better fish are taken on baits such as Corn, Caster and Worm.
