Nether Mill Coarse Fishery

Water Name

Nether Mill Coarse Fishery, Penistone

Description

Review by Malcolm Cooter. This is a single mixed coarse lake fishery, stocked with the usual Perch, Tench, Roach, Rudd and Crucians. They also have the obligatory Carp of various types ranging in size from 6oz to 12lb.

The lake covers about an acre with a circular island at one end bordered by lilies. A long central island planted with weeping willow, sedges and grasses and finally a small island at the other end planted similar to the middle one. The margins have been planted with a few clumps of bull rush which should spread nicely to make some good margin features to fish to.

The pegs are iron, paving and a cinder path runs behind most of the 32 pegs with a well-tended lawn area all around it. It is quite disabled friendly with a really nice clean loo that works (mind you it has only been open 6 weeks).

This is a fishery that you can use all methods on. I tried float feeder and small bomb and there was plenty of distance to cast to the islands. The lake has a very flat bottom at the moment so not a lot for the feeder to hold up against, you have to tighten down very carefully, but when it gets some bottom weed growth this will be better.

The average depth is about 6ft and the sides of the lake slope quite quickly to this depth. I was getting bites on all methods I used. Whilst I was there they had a match which was won by a pole fisherman. The winning weight was just over 19lb in 6 hours, mainly pasties with a few Roach, Rudd and skimmers making up the bag, not bad in 6 hours. Not sure on the bait but the lad next to me bagged up on worm.

Whilst only being open 6 weeks this is already a busy fishery, and it is worth ringing to check if a match is on before going. If you are going at the weekend I’d say go early to avoid disappointment.

The Owner (Mr Adam Hinchliff) is a very nice chap, and you can reach him for matches on 07770 670042. The bailiff is called Alan and you can get your day tickets from him at £5.00 for the day on the bank, they do not do yearbooks.
