Description |
Westerly Lake is a beautiful natural looking 1.5 acre lake that was produced 25 years ago when an area that was fed by a natural spring was excavated. The lake is an outstanding venue for anglers who want to catch quality silver fish, as well as holding some large carp. The fishery opens at 7am, and anglers who arrive between 7am and 8am can begin fishing and a day ticket will be available on the bank later, please make sure you are aware of the fishery rules. Please be as quiet as possible and do not walk through the caravan site before 9 am. All persons arriving at the fishery after 8am must call at the Lodge first. All cars must be parked on the anglers car park and should not be taken through the gate. Fishing is until sunset only (Met Office times), and all lines must be reeled in by the time listed on the Lodge window. Toilets are available on the caravan site and can be approached around the western shore without walking through the caravan site. Fishing on the caravan site bank is reserved for residents only. The fishery is dedicated to pleasure anglers and there are no matches, and keepnets are not allowed. Anglers fishing for carp must have an unhooking mat, and a large landing net. Since 2006 there have been some nice fish from the lake, seven different carp over 21 pounds, with a mirror of 27 pounds 9 oz, and a 27 pound 12 oz common, a grass carp of 22 pounds 8 oz, and a different fish of 21 pounds have also been caught. Anglers fishing with maggots can catch roach, skimmers, and gudgeon in large numbers, with plenty of roach to around 12 oz, and so far the occasional fish to just over the 2 pound mark. There are some large chub in the lake, with a fish of 6 pounds 2 oz caught in February 2008. There are some very big crucian carp in the lake, and a surprise last summer was an eel of 6 pounds. A perch of close to 4 pounds has been caught on more than one occasion, and a three pound fish has also been caught. Bream to almost 10 pounds have been caught this year, with large numbers of bream around the 3 to 4 pound mark caught regularly. Apart from maggots anglers are asked not to throw surplus bait into the lake, and must not leave it on the banks where it attracts rats, there are plenty of bins around the lake (please don't put maggots in the bins). Due to insurance reasons Westerly Lake is for over 16s only. The fishery is open all year. Check the website for more details and pictures. |
