Water Name

West Cowick Pond - Snaith.

Description

West Cowick Pond is a "mixed coarse fishery" with good stocks of tench, bream, rudd, crucians and small carp, this mature fishery has 25 well spaced pegs and is open all year round.

The water is a 6-acre clay pit that offers some classic big water fishing with the benefits of being very well stocked. Fishing is allowed from three sides of the water, which drops down to 17 ft near the middle. The pegs are well constructed, but can become submerged with high water levels. There is car parking on site and also on the roadside for pegs down the long side.

The main stock of fish in this water appears to be tench, with bags approaching 70lb a possibility with the right conditions. The average size of the fish range from 2 to 3lb, with some fish over the 4lb mark. There are a number of carp in the water in the low twenties but they do not visit the bank all that often. The rudd appear to be doing well, with certain fish over the 1 1/2 lb mark, Roach and perch are also present up to almost 1 lb. Although not many, the odd bream over 6 lb have also been taken. A large influx of small carp was added during 2005.

Tactics change with the seasons here. The warmer months generally see a waggler or pole approach close in near the marginal reeds or shelf. Worm, maggot and corm account for the tench. As the temperature drops the fish move further out and are taken on caster over loose groundbait, which adds a bit of colour. Fishing a big (big) lobworm on the leger at distance will give you a good chance of taking eels.
