River Swale

Description

Fawdington.

Tickets £3 in advance from Fish'n'Things, Boroughbridge (01423 324776) or The Oak Tree Inn Helperby.

This stretch can be found by heading through Boroughbridge, at the roundabout after the river bridge, turn right. Take the first right turn signposted Milby and Helperby and follow the road to its end. Turn right and cross over the Swale at Thornton Bridge . Take your next left, signed Sessay, then left again to Fawdington, there are a few signed access points, but please park clear of the road on the verges to allow farm traffic to pass and use the stiles provided.

The top part of the fishery is a mixture of shallow glides and deeper runs with an abundance of features in most pegs. The lower length is generally deeper and more productive late season.

The fishery is noted for the barbel and chub that are resident , which will respond to most tactics, though strong tackle is the order of the day due to the snaggy nature of most swims and the quality of the fish. There are also some very good pike present and the odd large brown trout. Dace and perch are the other dominant species.

The venue is occasionally used for matches, so check before a weekend visit.

Topcliffe.

There are a couple of clubs who have the rights for this water now. The one that I fished was the Black Bull bank, but this is now members only. The opposite side is also members only but books are sold by Leeds DAA.

Further up on the stretch known as Salmon Hall Farm is available on very cheap day tickets at £1.00 each, the right tactics will see you catching Chub to 3lb and barbel to 7lb. Northallerton Angling centre do the tickets
