Water Name

Brampton Canal

Description

Again similar to Worsborough Canal, this is another stretch of disused canal that has been brought back to life for fishing. The water is an absolute picture with plenty of bankside vegetation which give some very interesting features to fish to. Barnsley Angling Association manage and run this water and offers some very cheap day tickets as a result. Some of the areas for fishing do suffer from heavy bankside growth that can make stable footings a little difficult. The pegs closest to the parking areas are although suitable for anglers with disabilities.

The water averages between 5 and 6 foot deep throughout its length with a maximum width of just short of 15 metres. Strangely enough I struggled to find any uniform shelves on the canal. There were places on the housing side bank that did have small ones. None of the anglers present were targeting the far bank, even though they clearly had poles that would reach. There are about 50 or so pegs to chose from, and I am told that the best fishing is found half to two thirds away across the cut.

The dominant species here is Tench with better fish to 5lb 4 oz being recorded over the previous years. Most fish although average around the 2lb mark. There are also a number of big carp in the water, with larger fish in the high teens. Shoals of Bream are also present and can be distracted to stay in your swim with the right groundbait. They do migrate up and down the water through the day, better fish reach the 5lb mark. There are also plenty of skimmers and a good head of Ide also to the 5lb mark. As with most canals you will also find Roach (best 1 1/2lb), Perch (best 3lb 2oz), some crucian carp (best 2lb) and again the old blank day preventers in gudgeon.

For a full days fishing I would suggest that you target two main areas of attack, one towards the far bank, and again close in under the bankside vegetation. Corn fished over pellet on the far bank will take plenty of Tench with worm / caster as a change bait. The nearside peg will be full of roach / bream when using Bloodworm or Joker on the hook. Maggot or caster during the summer months will work fine. If the carp are your target then a big lobworm fished tight to the far bank features or crust to the same area will take fish on the right day.
