Water Name

Market Weighton Canal

Description

Originally the canal ran for 9 1/4 miles, from near Market Weighton, to the River Humber.

The length has now been reduced as the necessity to run the full distance is no longer required the Market Weighton Drainage Act of 1900 abandoned the upper 3 1/4 miles of the canal.

The canal now runs 6 miles to the Humber. The environment agency holds the rights for the water with the whole 9 mile stretch being leased by the Hull District Angling Association.

The extent of the fishery is between Weighton Lock, where it discharges into the Humber and the Sodhouse Lock. The water is quite varied with some parts being over 45 metres across whereas other sections drop down to only 15 metres or so. The water has some good depths with some parts being as deep as 15 foot, but most average around the 6 / 8 metres mark.

Obviously being attached to the Humber does mean that canal is tidal in its early sections and has areas of brackish water that does hold fish such as flounder. Care should also be taken when fishing near the overhead power lines.

There are 3 access points to the water and anglers do not tend to stray to far from these pegs. Consequently if you are prepared to walk you can fish many of the stretches that have not seen a hook before. The water does suffer from phenomenal weed growth during the summer months which does hamper fishing in a lot of areas. A weed cutter can often be the required tackle for the day. During the onset of winter the Environment Agency do cut the weed to assist with floodwater passage and this can make fishing impossible for a couple of days afterwards.

There is a wide variety of species present including Bream to 4lb, Roach to 2lb, Perch to 3lb, Dace to 7oz, Gudgeon, Pike with fish to 20lb present but often hard to locate. There are also, Eels and Flounders with the odd occasional Tench, Chub and a few rogue Carp that do run over the 20lb mark. Light tackle with single maggot will get you bites all day long, with bread sorting out the better fish.
