Delves Lake, Thorne.

Delves Lake, Thorne.

There are two lakes to fish here with about 13 acres of water to choose from in total. The waters are landscaped wonderfully only to be spoilt by a fair bit of rubbish on the banks (Come on take it home). It is a council run water administered by the Thorne and District Angling Association, who apparently do a lot of work on the water and have some additional good angling on a nearby canal. The banks provide good access, and with the addition of specially adapted toilets, it makes this the perfect venue for the angler with disabilities. There is also a cafe and secured car park.

Of the two lakes the smaller has a central island which is a good feature to drop a bait to, especially when the water is warming up or when the sun is blazing.

The average depth of this water is about 6 ft, although that you didn't have to go that far out to get a steady stream of bites from the roach, perch and bream (9lb 3oz).

Many anglers favour the pole at about 6 metres, catching at about 4½ to 5 foot on caster and maggot.

The second lake is quite a bit bigger and is stocked along similar lines to the first. What both waters do offer is plenty of bankside features to exploit, whether it is rushes, lily pads or shadows and branches from overhanging trees. There are carp present that run to over 30lb, although very rarely seen on the bank. Specimen tactics and a long wait appear to be the best way of getting these fish out. There are tench present that run towards the 6lb mark. The water is open all year round and apparently there are numerous pike that fall to both lure and dead baiting during the winter months.

Day tickets £2.50, £1.50 concessions. Year book available to run the calendar year £10.00 adult, £6.00 concessions - no nuts apart from properly prepared Tiger nuts, no live baiting, no wasp grub, bloodworm or joker. Open all year around from dawn until dusk. Keepnets only on matches.

Directions - From the M18 leave at junction 6 and take the A614 towards Thorne. After you pass the railway bridge the fishery entrance can be found on the right hand side of the road.

slack areas are found mainly on bends in the river, and the term slack refers to the part of the river where the current is not as strong.
