Sandholme Lodge Holiday Park, Newport. This is not a well known day ticket fishery, it is tucked away on a caravan park, and if you didn't know it was there you could quite easily miss it. It is a very small water at just over half an acre, with a limited number of pegs. Being on a caravan park, it does get busy during the warmer months with those staying on the park. There are toilet facilities on site and access to the water makes it suitable for anglers with disabilities. The pegs however, are unmade. The water is jammed packed with features to fish to, whether it be overhanging trees, lilies or marginal reeds. It has a central island and with most areas averaging 8 ft in depth, it does fish in the colder months. Both pole and rod and line will work, but care is needed with the trees or you could be losing tackle in them. The water has carp to 20lb as inhabitants, and they do tend to fall to the big baits fished to features. If targeting the carp you will need to beef up the tackle as all the features do have plenty of snags. The water does have a lot of skimmers, but bream to 5lb 3 oz have been caught over the last year. There are also a number of tench present with better fish to 3 1/2lb. There are a few crucian carp that go over the pound mark. The remaining stock is made up of the roach, rudd and perch. There are lots of them, with the odd bigger fish to over the pound mark. Maggot or caster will guarantee bites all year long. The bigger baits such as meat and corn will take the better fish. Carp will take the floating baits, under overhangs if you can get them in there are the best places. Day tickets £4.00, under 14's at £2.50 from the caravan office on the way in, on the bank if closed. Barbless hooks only, no carp over 2lb in the keepnets. Fishing from 6.00am until dusk only. Directions - Leave the M62 at Junction 38 and follow the road taking you to Newport. Go through the village and under the footbridge and then take a right turn on to Thimblewell Lane. You will then pass the M62 again - go to the T Junction and turn left here. You then need to look for a right turn onto Drain Lane - follow this road down to the caravan park.
