Broomfleet Ponds, Broomfleet.

Broomfleet Ponds, Broomfleet.

The three ponds at this location offer free fishing to all holders of the Environment Agency License. The Environment Agency has ploughed hundreds of fish into these three ponds. The variety of fish also means that there is something for all anglers throughout the year. The waters are suitable for anglers with disabilities, but there are no toilets on site.

The first of the ponds holds some very decent carp up to 20lb.

The centre of the pool is the deepest and tends to be the better place for the larger fish, there are plenty of smaller carp and tench up to 5lb that can be taken on match gear successfully using either corn or meat on the hook.

When the sun is baking the water, the carp are also partial to floating bread and mixers. As the water drops colder, then plugs and dead baits will see double figure pike caught.

The second pool is noted for its silver fish, with large nets of roach, rudd and perch possible on maggot, caster and worm. Fish fairly light especially during the colder weather, pole or waggler will work equally as well. Some of the rudd has been taken out at over 2lb, prompting arguments as to weather it was true or a hybrid.

The third and last pond is noted as a cold weather fishery due to the cracking sport that the pike provide. There are plenty of doubles in the water and a few that come out each winter over 20lb. Mackerel halves tend to work best, but drifting a roach deadbait can also produce good results if you have the water to yourself.

Day Tickets - Free - Barbless hooks only, no livebaiting.

Directions - You need to leave the M62 at junction 38, then take the B1230 to Newport. As you get to the turn right canal and go onto the track, follow it over the railway line to a small car park at the end of the lane. The ponds lie just behind the flood bank with parking adjacent.

slack areas are found mainly on bends in the river, and the term slack refers to the part of the river where the current is not as strong.
