Newbiggin Pond

Newbiggin Pond - By Warden (Phill Sanderson).

Newbiggin pond is situated in a picturesque position at the side of Tankersley golf course. Bordering Sheffield/ Barnsley just off the M1 to Manchester by pass Jct 35a northbound, you come to a small roundabout at the end of the slip road, go straight across and after about 200yds there is a sign for Tankersly golf club. Turn right there and the gate is immediately on your left to the Newbiggin pond.

The pond has twelve easily accessible pegs all on the level and all are well maintained, there is only a short flat walk from the car park so is ideal for the less agile angler. The pond is also a nature reserve and you can expect to see a varied selection of animals around the place. There are a few common sense rules; Landing nets to be assembled before fishing commences, rods not to be left unattended, barbless hooks only, no keepnets,

The pond is well stocked with good size and quality fish, with carp up to 15lb, bream up to 5lb, tench also up to 5lb, chub up to 4lb, crucians to about 2lb, ide to about 2.5lb and a good selection of roach and perch to about 1.5lb. Most methods will catch you fish, with maggot and pellet being the favoured baits with the regulars, The pond is about six or seven ft deep in the middle but will produce fish in the margins at either side, which are about 2 to 3 ft.You may only fish from one side as the other is the nature reserve but you have 30/40 yd's of water in front of you.

Although this pond is situated near a major by- pass it has a very peaceful and secluded feel about it with plenty of bird and pond life in evidence. This pond is a very popular venue if you go at the weekend. Get there early, membership does not give you preference over day ticket fishermen.

Day tickets cost £2 each, a bargain for such a good water, and can be obtained from the bailiff on the bank side, Permits are sometimes available at £10 per year but are highly sought after and difficult to obtain (see the bailiff for more details if interested in purchasing one). Site member Warden (Phill.) is one of the bailiff’s there and is usually available to join you if you wish for a days fishing.

Phill.

New Biggin History and Photographs - By Warden (Phill Sanderson).

In the mid 1980’s it was decided to build a major bypass close to where New Biggin was, so close in fact it was decided to move the pond to accommodate this new road but after draining the pond removing a tree that grew in the middle of the pond it was decided to leave it where it was ,so they dug the pond to its current depth from about 3ft deep, see enclosed photo’s the paths and pegs were added later.
